Cats is a musical that premiered in the early 1980's with Pop music. And it's 1998 DVD recording is free on Youtube. The musical has some symbolic story that mostly serves as glue to connect the musical numbers. There's also a movie but that had some very serious issues which priorised the very minimal story over the music and slaughtered most of the music.
What's on Youtube
It appears that the videos are from an official channel that has the rights to those videos, which explains why they have split up the DVD release into so many videos, each covering only a single music number and sometimes even splitting a number to two videos. The Youtube Playlist consists of 34 videos covering pretty much the whole musical, but cutting out the short acts between the musical numbers.
Cats - The least important bit: the story
The story of Cats is pretty simple: Stray and garbage dumpster cats meet once a year and we get introduced to each cat, including their leader, Old Deuteronomy and the cat Grizzabelle, an old cat rejected by most of the others. Grizzabella makes a plea to be included again and manages to convince the group. Old Deuteronomy decides to grant her a reincarnation into a new and better life. The End.
Why watch it?
The music is great 80's pop/dance music, the choreography is fun to watch. It's hard to sit still during the Jellicle Ball and a couple other numbers. The videos on Youtube give you a chance to see why Cats was such a huge hit and see if you would enjoy the music and the dancing in a theatre.
Why not watch it
It cannot replace experiencing it in a theatre or even just the DVD release, especially as you get interrupted with the outro of each video. Its simple been cut into too many videos and the outro in each video becomes annoying quickly. It's also missing the story which, while very basic, helps to connect the music numbers quite a lot.
